Michael Draper (2010, Mt. St. Joe's) does Mets proud in Sunbelt Classic!!
Mount St Joe's super deluxe INF, Michael Draper approached me last week about attendig the Sunbelt Classic in Oklahoma. While we worried about missing him for the upcoming William & Mary tournament we will never prevent a kid from doing something they feel is a positive in their baseball career. Boy was this ever a positive!! Here is an exert from a report given to me and a follow-up report on www.digitalsports.com :
"Mike Draper had 5 home runs including a grand slam vs Team Ohio, and a 2 run HR vs Arizona in 6th inning to tie the game at 8-8. For the week he was 12-21 at the plate (.571), which lead his team and second best in the tournament. He was also selected to the All Tournament Team. Defensively he played second base all week with no errors. The level of play was very good including 12 players from the Texas Team had D1 Scholorships and 10 were drafted. Mike did well against them, with a 2 run HR for Team MD's only runs. Thanks for arranging the Mets schedule to allow Mike to make this trip. Digital Sports had a nice article on the tournament and metioned Mike's performance."

The South Carolina heat slows velocity but not Mets bats at the Coastal Carolina Firecracker, while the Mets Black looks sharp at William & Mary!
The Mid-Atlantic Mets combined squad traveled to Coastal Carolina for their 1st ever Firecracker Classic down in Myrtle Beach, SC. Facing a tough task in Game 1 the Mets faultered stranding 8 guys in scoring position against perennial power the Dirtbags (18 D1 commits) and lost 4 - 0. This ultimately eliminated the Mets from championship contention (Dirtbags went 6 - 0 and won the tournament). After that scoring did not become a problem as the Mets finished the final 3 games 2 - 1 scoring a combined 25 runs including 7 home runs. Super-deluxe OF Michael Douglas (pictured above) slammed 3 home runs throughout the tournament, and added 3 doubles and multiple stolen bases. 2010 INF Kyle Toomey added 8 hits for the tournament out of the 3 hole, and Derek Justice (Grad Slam), Zach Spahn, Sean Kennedy, Brandon Scott, and Michael Howerton all added a blast to the Bomb Board.
Meanwhile, in Williamsburg the Mets Black combined squad had a strong showing on Saturday against the Patriots of NOVA and the NJ Diamond Hawks. RHP/Utility Bradley Markey lit up the radar guns with his 87 - 88 mph fastball, while Zach Wade, KJ Hockaday, and Kyle Weston led the hitting attack with multiple hit games for the Mets on Saturday.
The Mets will be back to full strength over the 4th of July weekend when the Orange & Royal teams enter the Dynamic 4th of July tournament at UVA and the Black Squad heads to UNC - Charlotte/Davidson for their 4th of July tourney.
North Stafford 2010 OF Michael Bill heads up the Mid-Atlantic Mets "Bomb Squad" Board
North Stafford 2010 OF Michael Bill proves that great things don't always come in big packages. Bill is a 6.6 sixty speedster, with a plus, plus arm in the OF, but what seperates him from most other kids his size is the amount of power he generates from his bat. Bill heads up the Mets "Bomb Squad" board this young showcase season with 5 home runs!!! Here is what Coach Gitzen has to say about Michael: "Michael is the biggest surprise of our young showcase season. We new he had speed, arm strength and power potential but he has exceeded all of our expectations. He is a hard-nosed, team first oriented ball player that will no doubt be catching the eyes of more coaches as the summer continues!!" You can see performance updates on all the Mets under the Mets tournament news tab. 2010 RHP and 2-year Met verteran Will Norrell joins the Mets Black squad!!
Lawerence Academy (NC) 2010 hurler Will Norrell brings a year of experience and poise to the Met Black squad and Head Coach Erik Lemley's rotation for the 2009 summer season. After spending the 2008 summer with the Mets organization (mostly behind the plate and at 3B), Will has gone back to his first passion to pursue his dream of pitching at the next level. After tossing away the gear Will has transitioned into a reliable starter capable of eating up big innings, and rejuvinated that "long arm circle" into a RHP that knows how to work fast and get outs even faster. Here is what Coach Gitzen has to say about Will: "Will was one of the top young pitcher's in his age bracket very early in life but faced the challenge of needing to help out his high school program (formerly of Northeastern in NC) in other ways with his catching. This put his pitching on the back burner, but with his transfer to Lawerence he rekindled that skill and used his mid 80 fastball and combination of various off-speed pitches to help Lawrence to a private school state championship in 2009!! Not to mention the fact that Will is a great kid with a very high GPA and a personality that any coach or teammate would enjoy." Will takes the mound on June 7 in Winston-Salem for the Mets Black Squad wearing his # 23 jersey.
2010 RHP TJ Campbell joins the Mets Orange squad for the summer of 2009!!
Coach Keith Gordon's Orange squad has landed another quality arm in the form of Bel Air (MD) 2010, TJ Campbell!! Campbell is a well-rounded RHP who will play a big role in the success of the Mets Orange staff over the 2009 summer showcase season. Campbell brings a late-breaking 2-seam fastball, 2 plane breaker with depth and and ground-ball getting change-up. Hear is what Coch Gitzen had to say about TJ: " We could have set up shop in Bel Air, MD and almost formed an entire team of quality ballplayers from just that area, and TJ is definitely one of those kids that represnt that baseball area well. A student of the game TJ has focused on his future on the mound in order to better his mrketability to people at the next level, and it is paying dividends. TJ has the potential to throw very hard as he focuses fully on his efforts as a hurler and should demonstrate a rested and ready arm that should please many at the next level." TJ takes the mound in the season opener for the Mets Orange Squad on June 6 at Guilford College for the Mets Orange Squad wearing the #25 uni!!
Bel Air RHP Mike Schmitt joins Mets Royal pitching staff in 2009!!
Bel-Air Brave (MD) RHP Michael Schmitt will bring his repitoire to the mound for the Mets Royal squad in 2009! Schmitt helped to anchor one of the deeper staffs in Maryland High School baseball this year with his mid-80's fastball and commanding physical presence on the mound. The same qualities that makes Mike a number #1 pitcher on most high school teams in Maryland will play big in the dept of the pitching roatation fo the mets Royal team this summer. Here is what Coach Gitzen had to say about Michael: " Michel brings good velocity and true downward plane movement to the mound with his 2 and 4 seam fastballs and mixes his pitches well with a solid breaking ball and a quickly improving change-up. Like most pitchers on our staff, Mike brings an intensity and mental toughness needed to win the big game or get the big out when needed. Very high ceiling for this 6'4", highly athletic Maryland product." Watch Mike take the mound for the Mets Royal squad on June 7 in Winston-Salem, NC at Elon wearing the #23 jersey!
Mike Costello joins the Mid-Atlantic Mets Royal Squad for 2009!!
Stonewall Jackson (VA) RHP Mike Costello suits up in the #24 jersey this summer for the Mets Royal Squad. Costello is another under the radar talent that has formulated the "large" (6 pitchers 6'3" and above) roster of fire-balling righties that will occupy a lot of mound time with the Royal squad in 2009. Mike has a solid 3 pitch repitoire with a developing cutter that compliments a heavy fastball that will reach into the high 80's for the better part of the summer. Not to mention Mike is an very athletic hurler who also garned 1st team All-district honors in 2009 as a Utility player in the very competitive Cedar Run district. Here is what Coach Gitzen says about Mike: "Mike solidifies a staff that could stroll out 10 - 12 different guys out on a mound that can all perform equally well at any given time. What we get in Mike is one of those guys with a drive to be a big time pitcher at the next level, who has the body and stature to peak out well after his days with the Mets are over. Mike is definitely going to see some big innings this summer, and we have full confidence that when he takes the ball good things are going to happen." Watch Mike take the mound with the Mets on June 7th in Winston-Salem, NC at the Golden Spikes!!
Mets Orange inks Loyola Blakefield INF Troy Marrow for the 2009 season!!!
The Mets Orange INF just keeps getting better with the addition of hard-hitting 2010 Troy Marrow from. Marrow was a full-time 2nd baseman for the Don's this high school season, but will see a lot more time at 3rd in the summer. While Troy has the ability to cover all three infield positions with deceptive quickness (7.0 - 7.2 sixty speed), it is Troy's bat and work ethic that set him apart. Coach Gitzen had this to say about Troy: "In order to fully appreciate Troy you have to watch him play this great game. When most kids are jogging from place to place or waitin for things to happen,Troy is making those things happen with sure grit and determination. Now after all that, factor in that Troy has plus range for a 3B, can turn it in the middle and hit like a guy 6 inches taller then him and you have a true throwback player that we are going to enjoy watching do things right all summer long." Troy hits the field (and hits it hard!!) on June 6th in the Golden Spikes tournament in Winston-Salem, NC with the Mets Orange squad.
Mets Black lock up Spotswood 2010 Zach Wade for the '09 Summer Season!!
Spotswood HS (VA) 3-way threat Zach Wade will join the Mid-Atlantic Mets Black Squad for the 2009 summer showcase season! Wade is a truly athletic talent who poses above-average ability at 3 highly recruitable positions (RHP, OF,C) and a strong stick from the left side of the plate. Wade's multi-facted talents should serve him well with new smaller rosters calling on players to do more and more at the next level. Here is what Coach Gitzen had to say about Zach: "Zach's best asset is his versatility and coachability. He has the protoypical body type and athleticism that gives him a lot of options on what to focus on, or better yet, what a coach at the next level could tell him to focus on. We truly think Zach is the type of player that maximizes his marketbility with his ability at all 3 positions he plays." You can see Zach suit up for the Mets Black squa on June 6th in Winston Salem, NC for the Golden Spikes!!! Mets add DH at UMBC on July 9th!!!
On July 9th the Mid-Atlantic Mets will invade UMBC's Baseball Factory field in Baltimore, MD in order to show Coach Jancuska and the rest of the Retrievers staff what the Mets have to offer!!! Here's what Coach Gitzen had to say about this event: "This is a great step for our program in order to bridge the gap from the Maryland colleges to our players, considering the fact that about 50% of our roster comes form Maryland!!! UMBC has top notch facilities, a great location and a great coach in Coach Jancuska and we are hoping to provide our player with just one more great option to continue their college baseball career!!" The Mid-Atlantic Mets will begin this event at 4:00 with a full round of batting practice, infield/outfield and proceed to play a DH into the evening at Baseball Factory field!! Check back for rosters and details on this event in the upcoming weeks.
Mets Black ink PVI 2010 RHP Eric McGee!!
The Mets Black solidified their starting roatation with the edition of PVI (VA) RHP Eric McGee for the 2009 summer season. McGee was the Panthers solid #2 starter for the entire 2009 WCAC campaign and eventually got the starting nod against Bishop Ireton in the WCAC Championship. McGee commands a mid 80's fastball with good late movement and a PLUS breaker. Here's what Coach Gitzen had to say about Eric: "Anytime you can get a kid from a program like PVI you know he is going to have the preperation to compete on a big stage and perform well on that stage. Eric is no different as he shows a competitive edge that we enjoy in our pitchers and the ability to light up the gun. We are expecting good things out of Eric as we plan to give him the ball in big games for us this summer!" You can watch Eric and the rest of the Mets Black suit up on June 6th in Winston-Salem, NC"
Mets Royal add Matoaca 2010 RHP Brandon Lindsey to the roatation for 2009!!
2010 hard throwing right hander Brandon Linsey will help to anchor the Mets Royal pitching roatation for the summer of 2009. Lindsey adds to the already incredibly projectible pitching roation that boast 4 starters that are 6'3" and above, and Brandon is the biggest at 6'6"!! Brandon's long and lean frame allow him to mix in a mid-80's fastball without much effort which suggests that he will undoubtly reach velocities in the high 80's by mid-summer if he isn't already there now! Here's what Coach Gitzen had to say about Brandon: "Brandon has jumped on people's radar real fast by having a strong high school season for Matoaca HS (VA) and showing an large amount of improvement in just one year. He's got the make-up to be that weekend starter at the next level with a mid to high 80's fastball and good off-speed stuff. Add to that the fact that he has a 4.0 GPA and there should be plenty of doors open for a kid like Brandon!!" Brandon will be pitching with the Mets Royal on June 6th in Winston-Salem, NC wearing the #14 jersey.
Wyoming Seminary 2010 backstop Jason Cholish joins the Mets Orange squad for 2009!!
The Mid-Atlantic Mets Orange squad continued it's success in recruiting out of the state of Pennsylvania when Wyoming Seminary (PA) two-sport star Jason Cholish signed on for the 2009 summer season. Cholish not only shines on the ball field but also on the ice as he is a hockey star for WSHS! Cholish brings the toughness of a hockey player onto the ballfield as he commands the field with a strong leadership presence and an arm that can slow the running game. Here is what Coach Gitzen had to say about Jason: "Jason is an absolute workhorse who can handle the riggors of catching three to four games in a weekend and do so at a very high level. He has above-average opposite field power and a strong arm that puts him consistently in the 1.9 - 2.0 range on his throws to second. No doubt Jason should be a big part of both the offense and defense for the Orange team this summer." See Jason open up on June 6th in Winston-Salem, NC wearing the #27 jersey.
Great Valley (PA) speedster Michael Douglas joins the Mets Orange in 2009!!
The Keystone state has been kind to the Mid-Atlantic Mets and it is more then apparent then in the form of Great Vally (PA) outfielder Michael Douglas. Douglas is an absolute speed demon on the basepaths boasting home to first times in the 3.6 - 3.8 range and sixty times consistently clocking 6.4 - 6.6!! Here is what Coach Gitzen had to say about Michael: "They say speed kills and if that is the case then Michael is one of America's Most Wanted. He posses absolute game-changing speed that will put pressure on infielders everytime they field the ball and have outfielders think three when he puts it in the gap. His addition to the outfield gives the Mets Orange squad 5 OF's that run 6.9 sixty and under, with him anchoring it with 6.4 speed!" You can see Michael open up his season in Winston-Salem, NC wearing the #10 jersey. Mount St. Joe's dual threat Zachary Spahn joins the Mets Black squad!!
The Mets Black squad picked up huge LHP talent when they signed Mount St. Joe's 2010 grad Zach Spahn out of their February ID. But as an added bonus Spahn's bat will be coming with him. The 6'2", 195 LHP/1B, cruises at a mph range between 84 - 85, while his bat provides middle of the order pop from the left side. Here's what Coach Gitzen had to say about Zach: "Zach is primed to be a big part of our success in 2009. He sits in the velocity range necessary to get the right looks, but it is the 8 - 10 inches of movement on his fastball that seperates him on the mound. Couple that with some serious power potential and slick fielding and you can see why we are excited to have this kid in our program for 2009." Zach suits up in the #21 jersey for the Mets Black team on June 6th in Winston-Salem, NC.
Mets Royal Squad inks 2010 Woodbridge MIF Kyle Toomey!!!
Woodbridge HS (VA) 2010 MIF Kyle Toomey will anchor the middle of the Mets Royal defense for the 2009 summer season. Kyle was identified to us back in August of 2009 at our ID camp in Winchester, VA as he displayed a quick first step, great hands and gap power that made an immediate impact with our staff. Since then Kyle has done nothing but seperate himself as a elite D1 level SS capable of stepping in and playing right away at the next level. Here's what Coach Gitzen had to say about Kyle: "Kyle is the total package. His combination of speed (6.6 - 6.8 sixty), arm strength (84+), and leadership puts him in a class of elite MIF in VA. Add in a strong bat and a 3.9 GPA, and you have a kid that deserves every accomplishment that comes his way!" Kyle will suit up wearing the #11 jersey for the Mets Royal on June 6th in Winston-Salem, NC. Mets Royal Squad adds 2010 Greenbriar Christian catcher Adam Tiller!!
The Mets Royal Squad solidified their catching needs with the addition of GBC (Greenbriar Christian, VA) backstop Adam Tiller for summer of 2009!! Tiller splits time between the dish and the OF at GBC, which is currently the #1 ranked D2 Private school baseball team in VA, but will be a mainstay of the Mets lineup for the summer of 2009. Tiller is a major D1 catching prospect who combines arm strength (85+), quickness (6.8 sixty), and agility (1.8 - 1.9 POP time) with a great stick and a knowledge for the game. Here is what Coach Gitzen had to say about Adam: "Anytime you can get a kid from a program like GBC you know they are going to be a solid ballplayer and Adam is no different. He has what it takes behind the dish to manage the entire game the way a catcher should, but that's not the end of it as he handles the bat with the best of them!! Adam is going to make some coach and pitching staff VERY happy at the next level!" Adam will suit up wearing the #7 jersey on June 6th in Winston-Salem for the Mets Royal squad. Mount St. Joe's MIF Michael Draper suits up with the Mets Black squad for 2009!!
Mount St. Joe's MIF Michael Draper will bring his hard-nosed attitude and tireless work ethic to the Mid-Atlantic Mets Black squad for the summer of 2009!! Draper is a physical specimen in the middle infield who's persona shows up in all parts of his game. Draper posses all of the necessary tools one looks for in a next level middle infielder, with a consistent bat, above average foot speed (6.8 - 7.0 sixty), above average arm strength, good grades (3.5+) and the mental make-up that all coaches look for. Coach Gitzen had this to say about Michael: "Mike Draper has that "it" factor that hits you right away when you first shake his hand. Before you even watch him take one ground ball or swing once, you know this kid can play!! He is your prototypical table-setter that can hit for average, hit-and-run, bunt, steal bases and not to mention drive one to the gap!! We are excited to have Michael part of our program this summer and look forward to what he will bring to the ballpark everyday!" Michael opens up on June 6th in Winston-Salem wearing the #5 jersey for the Mets Black squad. Avon Grove power source Corey Snyder signs on with the Mets Orange Squad for 2009!
Avon Grove (PA) 1st basemen Cory Snyder will be wearing the blue and orange of the Mid-Atlantic Mets for the summer of 2009!! Snyder is an incredibly athletic corner infielder who projects out as a big-time power source from the left-side of the plate. A true first baseman by trade, Snyder is a huge part of Avon Grove's offensive lineup and will no doubt be a big part of the Mets Orange lineup as well. Here's what Coach Gitzen had to say about Corey: "We are very fortunate to have Corey in our program. It is hard for us to recruit out of Pennsylvania with some of the high-caliber showcase programs in that state and surrounding areas, and a lot of them wanted Corey for the same reasons we did. He has a HUGE ceiling at the plate and an excellent glove in the field that will most certainly play at the next level. We expect some BIG things out of this young man!!" You can see Corey open up on June 6th in Winston-Salem, NC wearing the #21 jersey for the Mets Orange squad. CM Wright star Brad Markey joins the Mid-Atlantic Mets Royal Squad for 2009!
CM Wright 2010 dual threat Brad Markey will join the Mets Royal Squad for the 2009 summer season. Brad is a 3-year Varsity starter for 2008 4A Maryland State runner-up CM Wright in Baltimore, MD. While better know for his pitching success (87+), Brad has been a mainstay of Wright's infield and is one of the smoother SS's in the state of Maryland. Using plus range and arm strength, Brad puts himself into a classification of a two-way collegiate player with his tenacity and his bat. Here's what Coach Gitzen had to say about Brad: "Brad is a great example of what we and the guys at the next level look for in a prospect. He is a true student of the game and an incredibly hard worker. Combine that with his plus athletic tools and you have a kid who anyone would want as a part of their program. Brad is a must see in 2009!" Brad will actually begin his season at Baseball Heaven in Connecticut but will rejoin the Mets on June 12 - 14 at either VMI or Wake Forest, NC wearing the #3 jersey.

McBride is a true next level catcher who poses a strong frame (6'1, 200), athleticism (sub 7.0 sixty time) and arm strength (2.0 game time POP). As an added bonus he is a strong academic student and a middle-of the order hitter at the next level. Here is what Coach Gitzen says about Brian: "Brian McBride is a perfect example of how loaded we are at the catcher's position this summer. He epitomizes that "field general" mentality in how he approaches the game and backs it up with his stick. What set Brian apart is his mobility and athleticism behind the dish. He has quick hands, quick feet and a strong arm. That combined with his stick and his demeanor will play out nice for someone at the next level." Come see Brian suit up in the #27 for the Mets Black Squad on June 6th in Winston-Salem, NC.
Mets Orange add 2010 Good Counsel OF George Smith to 2009 Roster!!
Good Counsel (MD) 2010 George Smith Jr. will be patrolling the outfield all summer for the Mets Orange squad in the summer of 2009. Known for his plus spped (6.8, sixty) and defensive arm (86+ mph), George brings an extraordinary amount of gap-to-gap power for his size. Here's what Coach Gitzen had to say about George: "George Smith is the poster boy for Good Counsel baseball and all of the hard work that they put in in Olney, MD everyday. He is a plus defender, plus runner and can hit like a guy twice his size. With his range and arm strength he can play all 3 OF positions at a very high level in college." George opens up wearing the #20 jersey on June 6th in Winston-Salem, NC for the Mets Orange Squad!
Mets add pre-tournament workout at defending D2 National Champs, Mount Olive College on July 30th!!

It's not everyday you have the opportunity to walk on a field and know that this is a place where National Champions go to work. A program like Mount Olive's is in elite company in the ranks of D2 and could go out and compete with most of the D1 programs in the nation. It is a great opportunity for us as a program and we hope many more programs in NC will take this opportunity to see a great day of baseball with the Mid-Atlantic Mets."
Mets add a 3-way series at Mount St. Mary's University on July 11th!!

Here is what Coach Gitzen had to say about this event: "This is a great opportunity for players from our program to showcase in front of a great small D1 school like Mount St. Mary's. The Mount has excellent facilities and a tremendous baseball atmosphere, and would be a great baseball choice for any of our players. Given the location and the date this should also be a good opportunity for schools from Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania to get a nice look at all of the players in our program, and for our boys to show them what they bring to the table."
Sherwood 2011 RHP Will Bouey joins the Mets Orange squad for the 2009 summer season!!!
Sherwood HS (MD) super-soph Will Bouey will join the Mid-Atlantic Mets Orange pitching rotation for the 2009 summer season. As only a sophomore Will is an upper 80's pitcher with a polished approach of someone much older. Here is what Coach Gitzen had to say about Will: "Will Bouey is a great pick-up for our program and a tremendous young talent out of the state of MD. As only a sophomore he has electric stuff on the mound, and good control over 3 pitches with a fastball reaching 88 in the 2008 Crab Claw Classic. There is no doubt he will garner a lot of attention from several top end programs throughout the next 12 months of his high school baseball career." At 6'2", 205 pounds Lambke will share his sub 7.0s sixty and 87+ mph arm, between the outfield, 3rd base and the pitching mound. Here is what Coach Gitzen had to say about Taylor: "This will be the third year I have worked with Taylor and each year he continues to put the work in to be one of the more athletically diverse kids I have been around. Taylor is the kind of athlete who can make a seamless transition from the infield to the outfield or vice-versa and you would think he has played there all of his life. We are very excited to see this 5-tool guy produce this summer." Taylor will open up with the Mets Royal team on June 6th in Winston-Salem wearing the #2 jersey.

Here's what Coach Gitzen had to say about Derek. "This should be a huge summer for Derek as he returns to the top of our lineup and CF. After spending an entire season with us and a fall with the Mid-Atlantic Red Sox he should be more then ready to step up and take his place as one of the better defensive outfielders in VA. He will also see some good innings off the mound, as quite a few programs have interest in him as a pitcher." Derek will wear #21 for the Mid-Atlantic Mets Royal as they open up in the Golden Spikes tournament in Winston-Salem, NC on June 6th.
